Growth Points in Kefalonia and Ithaca

The District of the Ionian Islands is an island region which relies mainly on tourism, trade and transportation and is one of the leaders in the tourism sector in the country. Considerable prospects lie in  the upgrade of tourism, in connection with the agri-food and primary sector in general, as well as culture.  It is characterized by a natural environment of distinctive beauty and quality and a noteworthy cultural legacy, all of which are parameters constituting sources of protection and promotion. 

The main growth points on the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca are categorized as follows:

Urban growth points of regional importance are Argostoli, Kefalonia, the main urban center of the island and the seat of the Municipality of Kefalonia. It features all the basic infrastructures and services of a modern city.

Tourism growth points (which are considered points of focal and linear tourism developments that gather and then spread growth in this sector)

Of national scope: Vathi in Ithaca, Argostoli and Fiskardo in Kefalonia.

Of regional scope: Skala, linear development of Pessada- Lourdata in Kefalonia.

 

 

Gateways of the transportation network on the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca are categorized as follows:

International sea gateways: port of Argostoli and port of Sami in Kefalonia.

National sea gateways: (ports that serve interregional connections): port of Pisaetos and Vathi in Ithaca, port of Poros in Kefalonia.

Regional sea gateways: port of Fiskardo and port of Pessada in Kefalonia.

It should be noted that new infrastructures for water airports are being promoted on all Ionian islands.

The air gateway which serves Kefalonia and Ithaca is the International Airport of Kefalonia.  (ICAO: LGKF).

It should be noted that since 2017 and throughout 2019, the airport of Kefalonia had been and is being upgraded by completely replacing and expanding the terminal building to double its previous surface area, and carrying out maintenance work on the airway.
